Oregon Inlet Impassable? My View

Have you ever fished under the bridge at Oregon Inlet? Have you ever taken a boat ride out in the ocean by way of Oregon Inlet? I have. It's absolutely beautiful..at times.

Sometimes the current whips up and there's no way you're going to get the anchor to set on the bottom because the current is too strong. The waves crash around the base of the bridge and the inlet is shut out. You're not going out there, no matter what measures man takes to allow it. The dredge continues.

Sometimes the water is calm, calm enough to spearfish. Clear enough to see fish under the boat. Boats whiz in and out of the inlet.

Still, the dredge continues. It moves sand day after day...until...the money stops. And it sounds like it has.

While the article here isn't too clear on the specifics, I know two things for sure. When I'm fishing under that bridge, there's a nonstop bump, bump, bump of vacationers going over the bridge.

There are inshore and offshore boats taking vacationers out for a day on the ocean.

Without a passable channel, you can just write a check and send it to the state with the next passable channel because that channel brings in a lot more than just boats.

It sounds like political currents, not a hurricane, not natural currents, but political currents are what will make the inlet impassible this time. 4/11/11

  1. Hi - I look forward to reading your blog. I've never been to the OBX but plan to this year and have dreamed about it for a while. Here is a question for you. If you had never been and had to pick a section to go for the first time and just fall in love with OBX where would you go first, knowing that you could come back again and visit other spots later? Looking for awesome beaches, views and relaxation.

  4. Thanks, Russ. I appreciate it.

Rachel, I really love the Nags Head area. For us, it's located in just the right place. We're close to the fishing center (we're out on the water a lot) and it's close to some great restaurants and shops. My son loves to spend lots of time at Jockey's Ridge too (talk about the biggest sandbox ever). Of course, you cannot go wrong with any town you pick at the OBX.

  5. For me it's Hatteras Island, anywhere from Buxton to Hatteras (below the bend). There's a magic to that island that takes my breath away. Stay near where the island is at its thinnest, with views of ocean and sound to boot. Incredible.

  7. Thanks, Anonymous. Just to me clear, Russ isn't posting this blog. I'm a mom of two and love being out on the water at Oregon Inlet.

  8. I grew up near the OBX, now travel yearly from Wisconsin. Have to be sure you hit Jockey's Ridge, Wright Brother's Memorial. And eat at Awful Arthur's.
