OBX Endangered Sea Turtles--N.E.S.T.--Earth Day

Sea Turtle Sightings

I've been lucky to see a sea turtle while out on the water at the OBX--OBX Wildlife at it's best. It's the kind of thing that you never forget. You can also visit the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island to learn more about sea turtles. Operation: Sea Turtle Rescue is slated to open Summer 2011.

N.E.S.T.

Today, I'd like to share about N.E.S.T. This is the Network for Endangered Sea Turtles, Outer Banks, NC. You can call N.E.S.T. at 252-441-8622 to report Outer Banks nesting turtles, turtle crawls, stranded/dead turtles, or hatching events.

For the 2010 season, N.E.S.T. recorded eight Loggerhead nests and one Kemp's Ridley nest. Click HERE to view the data. If you're a teacher, this data will be great for classroom use too, so check it out. You can also visit their Turtle Kids Club to find fun, free resources for students and children including turtle game and coloring projects.

Here's a great nest hatching video from N.E.S.T. too. My son loved watching it.
